Imagine being able to support electricity produced from renewable sources like wind, hydro and landfill gas. Better still imagine supporting green electricity while being supplied via the existing electricity grid, just as you are at present. Right now, Green Electron is working to make it possible.

The majority of renewable generators that have been developed in recent years are supported by the Government’s 'Non Fossil Fuel Obligation' (NFFO). This support is scheduled to be withdrawn for many of these generators by the end of 1998, so they may not be competitive with conventional sources of electricity. To ensure that renewables can make a greater contribution to our environment, Green Electron aims to provide customers with the option of supporting the production of green electricity. This scheme will help to provide some of the necessary additional support required by existing and renewable generators.

Which renewable sources of electricity are being used by Green Electron?
Small scale hydro and landfill gas operators have been contracted to secure green electricity for the pilot scheme. As the scheme expands, we will also consider other renewable sources such as wind, biogas and biomass.

Who decides which type of electricity generation is green?
The Energy Savings Trust run an accreditation scheme called Future Energy which operates by vetting and auditing renewable energy offerings from electricity suppliers. Green Electron was one of the first schemes to be awarded Future Energy accreditation providing independent confirmation that SWEB are fulfilling their promise to customers.

Additional Cost (approx. £12/yr depending on which band you select)
A small premium is added to your quarterly electricity bill. For the typical domestic customer who consumes up to 5,000 kilowatt-hours per year (equivalent to annual bills of approx. £300), the quarterly premium is £6.25. If you are a low user (annual bill below £180) your quarterly premium could be as low as £3.00. The actual amount will vary according to your electricity usage.

You can decide which price band you wish to pay and so elect to have either all or just part of your electricity usage matched to electricity generated from renewable sources.
